Hans Erich Pfitzner was a German composer and self-described anti-modernist. His best known work is the post-Romantic opera Palestrina (1917), loosely based on the life of the sixteenth .Classical CD review. Pfitzner’s ‘musical legend’ Palestrina divided critical opinion from the very first, following on its première in the immediate aftermath of the First World War. Some commentators, Thomas Mann and Bruno Walter among the most prominent, hailed it as an overwhelming masterpiece.all tudor reviews . Follow us on Twitter. Consequently his music has not been tainted in .Of all the claims made for the various merits of neglected composers I believe Pfitzner’s music makes one of the strongest. My recent discoveries have included his Quintet for piano and string quartet (1908), the Sextet for clarinet, violin, viola, cello, double bass and piano (1946) and the Piano Concerto , Op. 31 (1922).

I was going to write that the music of Hans Pfitzner is late-romantic - very late - and it is. However that does not mean that it sprawls. In fact, these three concertos, expressed in ‘old-fashioned’, 19 th century language span as long as 23 minutes and as short as 14 minutes. It is quite the opposite of what I would have expected of a composer of Pfitzner’s stamp.
Classical CD review. There is a photo in the booklet accompanying this 2 CD set showing the Turkish pianist Idil Biret during the rehearsal of Hindemith’s Concert Music for Piano, Brass and Two Harps conducted by Nadia Boulanger in 1963. This shows that she has been associated with the work for at least fifty years.

Naxos has recently issued very good discs of romantic Lieder, including those by Peter Cornelius (four volumes) and Hans Pfitzner (three volumes). I enjoyed Pfitzner’s volume 1. The Art of the Impossible. by D'Arcy Philip Gray. David Tudor is perhaps best known even today as a pioneer in the performance of new music for the piano. His mastery and subsequent graduation from the traditional repertoire of the classical pianist, in favour of the music of Boulez and Stockhausen, can be seen as the beginning of a journey.
